From Kaduna Academy to the Premier League: The Incredible Rise of Zadok Yohanna

Just a year ago, few football fans outside northern Nigeria had heard the name Zadok Yohanna. Today, the 18-year-old winger from Bauchi State has become one of Nigeria’s most exciting football exports after completing a blockbuster move to Premier League club Brighton & Hove Albion in a deal reportedly worth £21.5 million.

The transfer has sparked widespread celebration across Nigeria, with politicians, football enthusiasts, and sports stakeholders hailing the teenager’s incredible journey from local football pitches to one of the world’s biggest leagues.

Beyond the inspiring nature of his story, Yohanna’s move is making headlines for another reason. Reports suggest the transfer fee surpassed the previous record for a player sold from Sweden’s top division, highlighting the enormous faith Brighton has placed in the young Nigerian talent.

Humble Beginnings in Bauchi

Born on June 29, 2007, in Bauchi State, Yohanna’s football dream began like that of countless Nigerian youngsters who hoped to use the sport as a pathway to a better future.

His breakthrough came when a friend of Ali Mohammed, founder of Ikon Allah Academy in Kaduna, spotted his talent and recommended him to the academy.

With the support of his family, Yohanna relocated from Bauchi to Kaduna to pursue his football ambitions under the mentorship of Mohammed and his coaching team.

Speaking about the youngster’s development, Mohammed recalled how Yohanna became part of his family from a very young age.

“Zadok is a wonderful child. He stayed with my family and me from the age of 12. We took care of his feeding, clothing, healthcare—everything,” he said.

For Yohanna, Ikon Allah Academy became more than a football institution; it became a second home, providing guidance, discipline, and support during his formative years.

Sacrifice Behind the Success

The journey to professional football was far from easy.

Mohammed revealed that the academy’s early years were marked by financial challenges and sacrifices. Players often traveled long distances in overcrowded vehicles while academy officials personally accompanied them to tournaments and scouting events.

Despite the difficulties, the academy remained committed to developing young talents.

That dedication has produced notable graduates, including Nigerian international Chidera Ejuke, as well as Flying Eagles players Isaac Ayuma and Joshua John.

Now, Yohanna has emerged as the academy’s latest success story.

Rejection Before Recognition

Like many successful athletes, Yohanna’s path was filled with setbacks.

After impressing a Swedish scout during a scouting programme in Kaduna in April 2024, he was recommended to a FIFA-licensed agent. However, his progress stalled when another scout later concluded that he was not yet ready for European football.

Instead of giving up, Yohanna doubled down on his efforts.

He also endured unsuccessful attempts to break into Nigeria’s U-17 and U-20 national teams, setbacks that could have discouraged many young players.

His fortunes changed when AIK Stockholm scout Herish Sadi watched him during an Ikon Allah Academy scouting programme.

The scout was immediately convinced of his quality and reportedly urged AIK’s leadership to secure the deal without delay.

That decision would soon prove to be a masterstroke.

Instant Impact in Sweden

In 2025, Yohanna officially joined Swedish giants AIK Stockholm.

Despite arriving in a new country and adapting to a different culture and style of football, the teenager settled quickly and earned a place in the first team.

His explosive pace, dribbling ability, creativity, and confidence in one-on-one situations made him one of the most exciting young players in Swedish football.

Within months, Yohanna was attracting interest from several clubs across Europe.

Premier League sides, including Newcastle United, were linked with the winger, but Brighton ultimately won the race for his signature.

The transfer became the biggest sale in AIK’s history and reportedly set a new benchmark for player sales from Sweden’s top flight.

Why Brighton Chose Yohanna

Brighton’s interest in Yohanna is consistent with the club’s reputation for identifying and nurturing young talents before they become global stars.

Speaking after completing the move, the Nigerian teenager explained why Brighton stood out among other interested clubs.

“I watch Premier League games a lot, so I know the teams that use young players, and Brighton is one of them. They are really good at developing young talents, and I think their style of play suits me.”

Brighton head coach Fabian Hürzeler also expressed confidence in the youngster’s abilities.

“I’m looking forward to working with Zadok. Having seen his games and his attributes, he is a player who can impact matches in the final third.”

On June 6, Yohanna officially completed his move to Brighton, becoming one of the most highly-rated young Nigerian footballers to enter the Premier League in recent years.

Super Eagles Call-Up on the Horizon

Yohanna’s rapid development has not gone unnoticed in Nigeria.

Recently, Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle included him in the squad for the Unity Cup in London, a strong indication that he is firmly on the radar of the national team.

Although his senior debut was delayed after AIK declined to release him due to fitness and rehabilitation concerns, many football observers believe his first appearance for Nigeria is only a matter of time.

At just 18 years old, Yohanna already possesses many of the attributes required in modern football—speed, creativity, directness, and fearlessness.

A Dream Realised

Former Senate President Bukola Saraki recently described Yohanna’s rise as proof of what can happen when talent meets opportunity.

His story is difficult to ignore.

Less than a year ago, Yohanna was adjusting to life in Sweden after leaving Kaduna. Today, he stands on the verge of showcasing his talent in the Premier League while inspiring thousands of young Nigerians who dream of following a similar path.

From the streets of Bauchi to the football academies of Kaduna, through Stockholm and now Brighton, Zadok Yohanna’s journey serves as a powerful reminder that extraordinary talent can emerge from anywhere—and with determination, reach the very top.
