The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Ali-Balogun, disclosed this during the Darsel State Award Mathematics Competition held at the Adeyemi Bero Auditorium in Alausa, Ikeja. He was represented at the event by the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Abisola Dokunmu-Adegbite.
According to the commissioner, a comparison of students’ mathematics performance between 2024 and 2025 revealed remarkable progress, reflecting the positive impact of the state’s education reforms and initiatives aimed at promoting academic excellence.
He noted that recognising and rewarding outstanding academic performance has motivated students to perform better, particularly in mathematics.
“The results clearly show that our efforts are yielding positive outcomes. Rewarding academic excellence is making a difference, and I am confident that mathematics education in Lagos State will continue to improve,” Ali-Balogun said.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening partnerships that support quality education while encouraging students to remain dedicated to their studies. The commissioner also commended teachers for their unwavering commitment to improving learning outcomes across public schools.
Ali-Balogun highlighted the role of the Darsel Mathematics App, a digital learning platform introduced to improve mathematics education across the state’s six education districts. He said the technology-driven platform has helped bridge learning gaps, increased students’ interest in mathematics, and enhanced classroom learning.
During the competition, students in the Junior Secondary School Three (JSS3) category who demonstrated exceptional performance and consistent use of the application were recognised and rewarded for their achievements.
Speaking at the event, the Chief Executive Officer of Sapphire Exploit 21st Century Skills, Dr. Tolu Alalade, described the Darsel Mathematics App as a transformative tool that is reshaping mathematics education in Lagos public schools.
According to him, students correctly solved approximately 8.7 million mathematics questions through the platform during the current academic session, describing the feat as a major milestone in efforts to improve learning outcomes.
Alalade added that beyond academic success, mathematics equips students with critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and problem-solving skills that are essential for success in everyday life and future careers.
The state government reaffirmed its commitment to leveraging technology, innovation, and collaborative partnerships to further improve the quality of education and raise academic standards across Lagos public schools.
