The approval was announced by the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, following consultations with education stakeholders coordinated by the Office of Education Quality Assurance (OEQA). According to the government, the harmonised calendar was adopted after extensive stakeholder engagements to ensure a smooth and well-organised academic session.
Under the approved schedule, the new academic session will commence on Monday, September 14, 2026, following a two-day Staff Professional Development (SPD) programme scheduled for September 10 and 11, 2026. The first term will end on December 18, 2026, with the Christmas vacation running from December 21, 2026, to January 8, 2027.
The second term will begin on January 11, 2027, and conclude on April 16, 2027, while the third term will run from May 3 to July 30, 2027. Schools will proceed on the long vacation from August 2, 2027, marking the end of the academic year.
The calendar provides for 182 instructional days, comprising 64 school days in the first term, 61 in the second, and 57 in the third. It also includes scheduled mid-term breaks, examination periods, Open Day activities, and public holidays to enable effective planning by schools, teachers, parents, and students.
As part of the timetable, schools will observe a five-day mid-term break during the first term, from November 2 to November 6, 2026, while a 10-day holiday has been scheduled between the second and third terms, from April 19 to April 30, 2027.
The state government noted that schools operating international curricula that require dates outside the approved timetable may apply for calendar flexibility on or before August 21, 2026, in line with the state’s guidelines.
Alli-Balogun said the adoption of a unified calendar reflects the government’s commitment to improving the quality of education and ensuring a more organised academic system across Lagos State. He urged all public and private schools to comply fully with the approved schedule.
Education stakeholders have welcomed the harmonised calendar, noting that it will make it easier for schools to coordinate academic activities while helping parents with children in different schools to plan more effectively. The initiative is also expected to improve the scheduling of examinations, teacher development programmes, and quality assurance activities across the state’s education system.
