What began as an unexpected change of university has ended with a remarkable academic victory for Faith Oluwasegun Olateju, who graduated from Lagos State University with First Class Honours in Economics.

Olateju had initially dreamed of studying at the University of Ibadan and scored 291 in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, comfortably above the reported Economics cutoff of 260 at the time.
However, uncertainty surrounding university admissions and the prolonged Academic Staff Union of Universities strike prompted him to reconsider his plans.
With his mother’s support, he moved from Ogbomoso to Lagos and enrolled at LASU in April 2023.
Three years later, on August 18, 2026, he walked across the stage as a First Class Economics graduate.
Reflecting on the journey, Olateju described the unexpected change of direction as an important turning point in his life.
His university experience extended beyond classroom work. He participated in activities, served in leadership roles, built relationships and developed a stronger sense of purpose during his time at LASU.
His story has since attracted attention because of the contrast between his original ambition and his eventual achievement.
The journey from hoping to study at UI to graduating with First Class Honours from LASU has become a reminder that an altered academic plan does not necessarily mean an abandoned dream.
For Olateju, the destination changed, but the determination to succeed remained intact.
