The policy is expected to affect more than half a million students in the largest public school system in the United States.

The move follows growing debate over the impact of generative artificial intelligence on children, learning and classroom development.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said the city would impose a moratorium on generative AI for the affected age groups while officials examine the technology’s impact.

The restrictions are expected to cover pupils from 2 K through eighth grade, placing particular emphasis on younger learners.

The decision reflects a wider international debate about how schools should balance the educational possibilities of artificial intelligence with concerns about overdependence on technology.

Artificial intelligence has rapidly entered classrooms, offering students tools for research, writing, problem solving and personalised learning. At the same time, educators and parents have raised questions about how early students should rely on such systems and how their use could affect independent thinking and learning habits.

New York’s decision therefore represents a significant attempt to study the consequences of AI before allowing widespread student use among younger pupils.

As schools around the world continue to determine how artificial intelligence should fit into education, the policy could become an important reference point in the growing global debate over children and AI.
