Kano University gets approval to run 20 courses ahead of first admission

The Federal University of Science and Technology, Kabo, in Kano State, has received accreditation for 20 courses, including medical programmes, ahead of the start of its first academic session.

The accreditation means the university has received approval to offer the courses, bringing it closer to admitting students and beginning academic activities.

The Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, congratulated the university’s Governing Council, management and staff on the achievement, urging them to maintain high academic standards.

He spoke during a meeting with members of the university’s Governing Council, led by its Pro-Chancellor and Chairperson, Grace Laoye-Tomori, at the National Assembly in Abuja.

Laoye-Tomori said the accreditation was an important step towards the commencement of academic activities. She also thanked Jibrin for his role in the establishment and development of the institution.

The university began as the Federal Polytechnic Kabo following a bill sponsored by Jibrin in 2016. It was later converted into a university in 2025 after President Bola Tinubu signed the bill.

Laoye-Tomori said the 20 accredited courses included medical programmes and described the development as a major achievement for the institution.

In his response, Jibrin thanked the university’s council and management for their efforts and urged them to sustain the progress.

He also said access to quality education and relevant skills was important for young Nigerians, noting that the country’s development depended greatly on the knowledge and abilities of its young people.

The university is expected to begin its maiden academic session following the accreditation of the courses.
