The programme, described as a 10-year scholarship commitment, is designed to provide financial assistance to students and reduce some of the pressures that can make it difficult for young Nigerians to complete their education.
The initiative initially covered 20 tertiary institutions.
Following a new partnership with Miva Open University, the number of participating institutions has risen to 25.
OPay plans to extend the programme to another 16 tertiary institutions before the end of 2026, bringing the total to 41.
The expansion represents a significant increase in the reach of the scholarship programme and is expected to open opportunities for students in more parts of the country.
The scheme forms part of OPay’s broader education and youth development initiatives, which include the OPay Scholars Programme, the OPay National Innovation Challenge and OPay Futures.
For many Nigerian students, financial challenges remain one of the biggest obstacles to completing tertiary education.
Tuition, accommodation, textbooks, transportation and other academic expenses can place considerable pressure on students and their families.
Scholarship programmes can therefore provide more than financial relief.
They can give students the opportunity to concentrate on their studies without constantly worrying about how to meet basic academic expenses.
OPay’s decision to extend the programme to additional institutions also reflects the growing importance of partnerships between private companies and educational institutions.
The company has described education as an important area for social investment, particularly as Nigeria seeks to develop a skilled workforce capable of competing in an increasingly digital economy.
The expansion to 41 institutions is expected to make the scholarship opportunity accessible to a wider pool of students.
Beyond financial support, the broader OPay education initiatives seek to encourage innovation, entrepreneurship and technology-related skills among young Nigerians.
The programme therefore places emphasis not only on helping students remain in school but also on preparing them for life beyond graduation.
For beneficiaries, the scholarship could mean the difference between struggling to remain enrolled and completing their education with greater financial stability.
For the education sector, the initiative provides another example of how private-sector investment can complement efforts to expand access to tertiary education.
As the programme expands, more students across Nigeria will have the opportunity to pursue their academic ambitions with one less financial burden standing in their way.
