Academic activities at Abia State University (ABSU), Uturu, have been thrown into uncertainty after the Abia State University chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) declared an indefinite strike.

The union announced the suspension of academic activities following what it described as the failure of the Abia State Government and the university management to implement key provisions of the 2025 agreement reached between ASUU and the Federal Government. The agreement was signed on December 23, 2025, with implementation scheduled to commence on January 1, 2026.
The decision was communicated in a statement signed by the branch Chairman, Dr. Chidi Mba, and Secretary, Dr. Victor Obisike. The union said its action came after several engagements with the Abia State Government and the university administration failed to produce what it considered a satisfactory resolution.
According to the lecturers, ASUU had presented the agreement to the relevant authorities and subsequently issued a 21-day ultimatum, hoping that the outstanding matters would be addressed. However, the union said there was no meaningful response before the expiration of the ultimatum.
ASUU therefore directed its members to withdraw their services completely and suspend all academic and related activities at the institution.
The strike, which commenced on August 11, 2026, is described by the union as “total, comprehensive and indefinite,” meaning that lecturers are expected to remain away from their official duties until further directives are issued.
The union also instructed members not to participate in statutory university meetings, including Senate meetings and faculty board sessions.
The development places additional pressure on the Abia State Government and the university management to resolve the lingering issues and restore normal academic operations.
ASUU urged its members to remain united and steadfast while efforts continue towards resolving what it described as outstanding welfare and institutional demands.
The union said further directives would be communicated to members as negotiations and developments unfold.
The latest development also comes against the backdrop of wider tensions between ASUU and governments over the implementation of agreements affecting university lecturers. With other university chapters also raising concerns over unresolved commitments, stakeholders will be watching closely to see whether the Abia dispute can be resolved before the disruption spreads further across the institution.
For students of Abia State University, however, the immediate concern remains the uncertainty surrounding lectures and other academic activities as the indefinite industrial action takes effect.
