Navigating Adolescence: Finding your voice and building your future

By Ebimoboere Tobi

As adolescents, we all long to be seen, heard, and understood. We want our voices to resonate, our opinions to matter, and our actions to be respected. This is a critical time when we’re discovering who we are and carving our identities. But as we step into this journey, we must also be mindful of what we choose to see, hear, believe, and ultimately, the standards by which we define ourselves.

In a world filled with influences from friends, family, media, and society, it is easy to feel overwhelmed by what others expect or assume. However, we must remember that while our voices deserve to be heard, we also carry the responsibility to carefully filter what we allow into our minds and hearts.

A valuable lesson from my mentor has shaped my thinking: “Be careful with your thoughts, for they can become your words, which then shape your actions. These actions, over time, form your behaviour, which moulds your attitude, builds your character, and ultimately shapes your future.”

This idea reminds us that every small thought, word, or action matters. Our thoughts lay the groundwork for who we will become. If we foster positive, resilient, and respectful thoughts, they will lead us toward becoming positive, resilient, and respectful individuals. On the other hand, negative or careless thoughts can lead us down paths that may not align with our true values or goals.

Stand out with Purpose

As adolescents, there can be a strong pull to follow the crowd, to blend in, and to do what everyone else is doing. However, true strength lies in knowing when to stand apart. Rather than following the crowd, consider being someone others look up to because of your principles, integrity, and good behaviour. When you stay true to your values, you set an example for others. You become a leader, someone others can trust and respect.

By cultivating good habits, being mindful of our words and actions, and not allowing others to dictate our choices, we lay the foundation for a future we can be proud of. Be the person others want to follow, not because you’re simply part of the crowd, but because you stand for something meaningful and inspiring.

Overall view:

Our adolescence is a powerful time, a period where we lay the bricks of our future. Let us choose each brick wisely, being mindful of the thoughts we allow, the actions we take, and the people we influence. Let us be the individuals who not only want to be heard and seen but who also inspire and uplift others by standing firmly by our values.
