The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) says about 56,000 candidates registered for the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for Private Candidates, Second Series.

WAEC’s Head of National Office, Suleiman Kum, disclosed this during an inspection of the Computer-Based Test (CBT) English Language examination at its Training and Testing Centre on Ijaiye Road, Ogba, Lagos.

He said the registrations included about 272 walk-in candidates who signed up to write individual subjects.

Lagos State recorded more than 22,000 candidates, including about 50 walk-in candidates.

Kum said WAEC introduced computer-based testing in 2024 and was continuing to improve the system to reduce examination malpractice and make examinations more reliable.

He explained that candidates were searched before entering examination halls to prevent them from bringing in unauthorised materials.

According to him, the aim is to prevent cheating and ensure that candidates write their examinations under fair conditions.

Kum also advised candidates to prepare well by studying their subjects, practising past WAEC questions and reviewing marking schemes.

He urged them to read chief examiners’ reports, which explain common mistakes made by candidates and how questions should be answered correctly.

He said using these materials could help students understand their subjects better and improve their examination performance.
