Types of Mammals

By Rahma Bukar

Mammals are warm blooded vertebrate animals of a class that is distinguished by the possession of hair or fur, a female that secretes milk for the nourishment of the young and gives birth to their young alive.

We have three types of mammals in the world and they are marsupials, monotremes and placentals.

Marsupial mammals are mammals that are born incompletely developed and are carried in a pouch inside their mother`s belly. Examples of marsupials are Kangaroo, Koala, Opossum and many more.

Monotreme mammals are mammals that lay eggs. They only have one opening for eggs and waste. The only monotremes alive today are platypus and echidna.

Placental mammals are mammals that are carried inside their mother`s belly until their body system is completely developed and are old enough to come out. Some examples of placental mammals are cats, dogs, goats, elephants and so many more.
