Nigeria has taken a major step toward expanding digital education and preparing young people for the future workforce through a new partnership designed to open access to advanced technology training. The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially partnered with Coursera to launch the Digital Training Academy (DTA), a national initiative that will provide free digital skills education to 36,000 Nigerian youths.

The announcement was made by Tunji Alausa during the Education World Forum 2026 held in London, where the agreement was formalized. The programme reflects the government’s growing focus on building a digitally equipped workforce capable of competing in emerging global industries.
A National Digital Skills Programme Focused on the Future
The Digital Training Academy has been created to equip young Nigerians with practical and industry-relevant capabilities in some of the world’s fastest-growing technology sectors. Through the programme, selected participants will gain access to premium training pathways in artificial intelligence, data science, cybersecurity, cloud computing, software engineering, and several other high-demand digital disciplines.
Upon successful completion, participants will receive internationally recognised certifications designed to strengthen employability and improve access to career opportunities across both local and global markets.
A defining feature of the initiative is that cost barriers have been removed for participants. The Federal Government has fully funded 36,000 learning licenses across Coursera and Pluralsight for the programme’s first year, allowing beneficiaries to access premium learning resources without subscription expenses.
The Minister described the initiative as one of the most ambitious public investments in digital capability development in Nigeria’s recent history.
Why This Partnership Matters for Nigerian Youths
The launch comes at a time when employers worldwide are placing increasing value on digital competence and specialized technical expertise. While opportunities in AI, cybersecurity, software development, and cloud infrastructure continue to expand globally, access to quality and affordable training remains uneven for many Nigerian graduates and young professionals.

Implementation of the Digital Training Academy will happen through partnerships with the National Open University of Nigeria and Yaba College of Technology.
NOUN’s nationwide educational footprint is expected to support broader participation across different states, while YABATECH’s long-standing reputation in technology and technical education will contribute practical and institutional support.
Together, these institutions will combine structured mentorship, learner support systems, and local engagement with Coursera’s global online learning infrastructure.
This blended model is designed not only to provide course access but also to improve completion rates and create stronger connections between learning outcomes and real employment opportunities.
Access to Global Learning Without Leaving Nigeria
One of the strongest advantages of the partnership is direct access to educational content developed by internationally recognised universities, technology companies, and industry leaders.
Participants enrolled through the programme will study using the same quality of digital materials available to learners in regions such as North America, Europe, and Asia.
By absorbing subscription costs and creating institutional support structures, the government intends to make advanced digital education more accessible to young Nigerians regardless of financial background or location.
