The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has warned universities and other tertiary institutions against issuing official admission letters to candidates, insisting the board alone is responsible.

JAMB Registrar, Professor Segun Aina, issued the warning after a delegation from Veritas University, Bwari, Abuja, paid a courtesy visit to his office.
Aina said JAMB is the only body legally empowered to issue official admission letters to candidates seeking entry into universities, polytechnics and colleges of education across Nigeria.
He expressed concern that candidates could be misled into believing their admission was genuine simply because they received documents from an institution offering them admission. He urged institutions engaging in the practice to stop and ensure that candidates obtain the appropriate documents from JAMB.
The registrar recalled that the Federal Ministry of Education had directed that admissions into tertiary institutions be processed through the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS). He warned that admission procedures conducted outside the approved system were illegal and invalid.
According to him, institutions are not permitted to substitute their own letters for the official JAMB admission letter issued after candidates have accepted their admission offers through CAPS.
Aina added that only admissions processed through the approved platform are recognised for official purposes, including mobilisation for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
The warning reinforces JAMB’s position that candidates must verify and accept admission offers through CAPS to ensure their admission records are valid. Prospective students are therefore advised to check their admission status through the board’s official channels and obtain the required admission documentation.
