FATE Foundation, AIMS Launch $1.1m Drive to Equip Nigerian Youths with Advanced AI Skills

FATE Foundation, in partnership with the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS), has commenced efforts to roll out a $1.1 million Google.org-backed Africa AI Upskilling Programme designed to strengthen advanced artificial intelligence education and expand access to AI expertise among young Nigerians.

The initiative, which spans Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and South Africa, is geared towards cultivating a durable and scalable ecosystem for advanced AI learning. In Nigeria, the programme will extend across 10 universities, bringing lecturers, teaching assistants and penultimate- and final-year STEM students into its training framework.

Speaking at the Nigerian launch held recently at the University of Lagos, FATE Foundation Executive Director, Ayomide Akindolie-Igwe, said the organisation would work closely with participating higher education institutions to deepen AI knowledge while bolstering their capacity to deliver practical, industry-relevant training.

She disclosed that the programme is targeting more than 30,000 students for advanced AI training. Beyond short-term instruction, FATE Foundation intends to encourage partner universities to incorporate the advanced AI curriculum into their mainstream academic programmes.

The broader ambition, she explained, is to ensure that AI education does not disappear when the current cohort completes its training. Instead, the curriculum—or an updated iteration of it—is expected to remain embedded within STEM education across participating institutions in Africa.

The programme is therefore positioned not merely as a skills-acquisition project but as an attempt to reshape the academic infrastructure through which emerging technologies are taught. By placing educators at the centre of the initiative, the organisers hope to create a multiplier effect that can reach successive generations of students.

Google.org Sub-Saharan Africa Programme Manager, Matita Arize, said the organisation’s commitment to AI upskilling is anchored on the belief that technology should narrow, rather than widen, existing inequalities.

According to her, artificial intelligence possesses enormous transformative potential, but its benefits must not be confined to communities that already have strong technological advantages. She stressed the importance of equipping people closest to Africa’s developmental challenges with the knowledge required to devise practical solutions.

The collaboration between FATE Foundation and AIMS consequently reflects a growing emphasis on building indigenous technological capacity rather than treating advanced AI knowledge as an imported commodity.

With thousands of students and educators expected to participate, the initiative could provide a significant boost to Nigeria’s evolving digital-skills landscape while giving universities a stronger footing in advanced AI education.

The organisers ultimately hope that the programme will leave behind more than a trained cohort: they aim to establish institutional capacity, strengthen teaching expertise and create an enduring pipeline of African talent capable of participating meaningfully in the global AI economy.
