The initiative, tagged Codex in Action: Engineering the Future of Learning with AI, was held on October 28 at the Civic Centre, Lagos, on the sidelines of TechCabal’s Moonshot 2026.

The programme brought together 100 developers from Miva Open University and 100 senior engineers from Andela for a three-week development exercise powered by OpenAI Academy. The participants worked together to apply artificial intelligence to practical educational challenges.

The 100 Miva developers were selected from more than 1,000 applicants and received training in OpenAI Codex before collaborating with experienced Andela engineers to develop technology solutions for teaching and learning.

One standout project was Coteacher, a working prototype developed by Miva student Esih Egwurube, which won the showcase.

The platform helps students revisit classroom lessons by converting a teacher’s recorded lesson into personalised learning materials based on individual students’ needs and learning histories.

With teachers’ approval, students can download lessons for offline learning, access alternative explanations and activities when they encounter difficulties, and continue from where they stopped. When connected to the internet, they can also use an OpenAI-powered voice tutor, while their learning progress is synchronised with their teachers.

Reacting to the experience, Egwurube said the Codex training transformed his workflow and provided an opportunity to apply technical knowledge to real-world challenges.

Andela’s Vice-President for Africa, Middle East and Impact Partnerships, Kate Woska, said the initiative demonstrated how developers could move beyond experimenting with artificial intelligence tools to career/">building practical solutions that address real problems.

She explained that combining OpenAI Codex with the expertise and guidance of Andela’s senior engineers helped participants strengthen their technical capabilities and translate their knowledge into tangible outcomes.

The broader Codex learning initiative also recorded a 36-percentage-point improvement in assessed agentic engineering proficiency among 200 senior developers following two weeks of applied learning.

The programme forms part of the pan-African Codex Champions Series, which aims to strengthen AI engineering capabilities by combining structured learning, practical development and mentorship.

Lagos hosted the second chapter of the initiative following its inaugural edition in Nairobi, Kenya. The series is scheduled to continue in Cape Town, South Africa, on November 15, with another gathering planned alongside the OpenAI Forum.

The collaboration highlights the growing role of artificial intelligence in education and the importance of equipping African developers with the skills and experience needed to build technology solutions that respond to local challenges.
