Private School Owners Ask FG to Halt 2026/2027 University Admissions

The Owners of Private Schools Association of Nigeria (OPSAN) has called on the Federal Government to suspend ongoing university admissions for the 2026/2027 academic session until all Senior Secondary School examination results are released.

The association said the current admission process could disadvantage students whose results from the National Examinations Council (NECO) and the National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB) are still pending.

OPSAN National President, Prof. Uzochukwu Solomon Nwanonyuo, made the call in a statement following a stakeholders’ meeting held in Onitsha.

According to the association, some universities have already commenced or concluded their Post-UTME and admission processes based largely on available West African Examinations Council (WAEC) results, while many candidates are still waiting for their NECO and NABTEB results.

OPSAN argued that continuing the admission process before all O’Level results are available could prevent students who depend on NECO or NABTEB results from competing for available admission spaces.

The association noted that students from technical colleges, Federal Science and Technical Colleges, vocational institutions and commercial schools are among those who may be affected because many of them rely on NECO and NABTEB results for admission into higher institutions.

“Some Federal Universities have already concluded admissions for professional courses while students waiting for NECO and NABTEB have not even had a chance,” Nwanonyuo said.

OPSAN therefore appealed to the education-policy-for-out-of-school-children-and-adults/">Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Alausa, to intervene and direct the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) to suspend the ongoing admission process.

The association also called on the National Universities Commission (NUC) to direct universities to put their Post-UTME and admission exercises on hold until all O’Level examination results have been released.

The demand comes as Nigerian universities continue their admission processes for the 2026/2027 academic session, with students and parents awaiting the release of outstanding examination results.
