For Samuel Adebanjo Oluolamide, graduating as the overall best student of Lagos State University was the outcome of a journey marked by financial hardship, family challenges, determination and an unwavering commitment to academic excellence.

The 22 year old Aerospace Engineering graduate finished the 2025/2026 academic session with an outstanding 4.97 CGPA out of 5.0, emerging as LASU’s overall best graduating student.
His achievement is particularly striking because his academic journey was shaped by serious financial difficulties.
Adebanjo recalled that his family had to relocate from Lagos to Ogun State after severe financial challenges. At one point during his secondary education, he was sent home from school because of unpaid fees.
Rather than allowing the difficulties to determine his future, he continued his education and eventually gained admission to study Aerospace Engineering at LASU.
His university performance was remarkable. Over five years, he completed 81 courses, recording 77 As and only four Bs.
He also recorded seven perfect 5.0 grade points across 10 semesters, helping him steadily build an exceptional academic record.
By the end of his 400 level, his consistent performance had pushed his CGPA to 4.96. His academic record earned him selection for the OPay Scholarship as the only engineering recipient.
He eventually completed his degree with a 4.97 CGPA, becoming the overall best graduating student of the university for the session.
Beyond the academic figures, Adebanjo’s story is also one of sacrifice. He has spoken about financial pressure and his father’s illness, challenges that made his academic journey more demanding.
Yet he continued to pursue excellence, drawing motivation from his determination to make the most of the opportunities available to him.
His performance earned him a N10 million cash prize during LASU’s combined 29th and 30th convocation ceremonies.
Adebanjo’s story has since emerged as an example of how difficult circumstances do not necessarily have to determine academic outcomes.
From facing uncertainty over school fees to becoming one of the university’s most outstanding graduates, his journey demonstrates the impact of discipline, persistence and focused academic effort.
His 4.97 CGPA now stands not simply as a number but as the culmination of years of work carried out under challenging circumstances.
