A 300-level student of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Migwe Obinna Nicholas, has credited the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) with helping him remain in school, revealing that the intervention came at a time when he was on the verge of abandoning his education due to financial hardship.

Nicholas, who is studying Theatre Arts and Film Studies, shared his experience in an interview, describing himself as the only member of his family to gain admission into a university. He said persistent financial challenges had threatened his academic journey until he accessed the Federal Government’s student loan scheme.
According to him, the financial support from NELFUND enabled him to pay his tuition and continue his studies without interruption, offering renewed hope at a time when he had exhausted other means of funding his education.
Nicholas encouraged other students facing similar financial difficulties to take advantage of the loan scheme, stressing that seeking support should not be viewed as a sign of weakness but as an opportunity to pursue their academic goals.
The student’s testimony adds to growing accounts from beneficiaries who say the NELFUND initiative is helping reduce the number of students forced to suspend or abandon their education because of financial constraints. Since its launch, the scheme has provided tuition and upkeep support to thousands of students across public tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
The Nigerian Education Loan Fund was established by the Federal Government to improve access to higher education through interest-free loans covering tuition fees and maintenance allowances for eligible students in public tertiary institutions.
