The initiative is designed to bridge the gap between academic learning and workplace expectations by providing students with career-focused training, international certifications, mentorship opportunities, and exposure to global healthcare standards.

Speaking during the inauguration of the centre, the Country Director of the Canadian Education Council, Dr. John Adeniyi, said the partnership was established to address the growing disconnect between university education and the skills demanded by employers worldwide.

According to him, the CEC’s mission in Nigeria is to ensure that graduates are not only academically qualified but also equipped with practical, industry-relevant skills that enhance their employability across international markets.

Adeniyi explained that the council achieves this by creating International Career Centres within universities, enabling students to gain access to globally recognised certifications, career development programmes, and hands-on professional training.

He noted that the newly launched facility at UNIMED would provide students with opportunities to develop competencies required in healthcare systems across North America and other parts of the world.

The Vice-Chancellor of UNIMED, Prof. Ebunoluwa Adejuyigbe, described the establishment of the centre as a significant milestone in the university’s commitment to producing highly skilled and globally competitive healthcare professionals.

She stated that the International Career Centre would serve as a bridge between classroom learning and professional practice, helping students transition successfully into the workforce.

According to her, the centre will offer a range of services, including career counselling, employability and leadership training, mentorship programmes, internship opportunities, and exposure to international best practices.

Adejuyigbe emphasised that the collaboration aligns with the university’s vision of developing healthcare professionals and future leaders capable of driving innovation and making meaningful contributions both locally and internationally.

“The establishment of this centre reaffirms our commitment to producing graduates who are not only academically sound but also possess the practical skills, international perspective, and entrepreneurial mindset needed to thrive in today’s competitive global environment,” she said.

She added that the initiative would significantly improve students’ career prospects by preparing them for the rapidly evolving demands of the global healthcare industry.

University officials expressed optimism that the partnership would strengthen graduate employability, enhance professional development opportunities, and position UNIMED students for successful careers in healthcare systems around the world.

The International Career Centre is expected to provide a platform for students to acquire internationally relevant skills while connecting them with opportunities that support career growth beyond Nigeria’s borders.
