The University of Ibadan has emerged as Nigeria’s highest-ranked university in the July 2026 Webometrics Ranking of World Universities, placing the historic institution ahead of other leading Nigerian universities.

The latest ranking places UI at the top of the Nigerian list, followed by the University of Lagos and three other institutions that complete the country’s top five. The result reinforces the position of Nigeria’s oldest university as one of the country’s strongest academic and research institutions.
The University of Lagos followed UI as Nigeria’s second-ranked university, while the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Covenant University and Landmark University also featured among the country’s five leading institutions in the ranking.
The performance comes at a time when Nigerian universities are increasingly competing for recognition based not only on teaching but also on research visibility, digital presence and the international accessibility of academic knowledge.
