Social media has become a big part of our lives. Every day, new trends appear on TikTok and other social media platforms. Sometimes, we feel pressured to join these trends, especially when we see our classmates participating. Many teenagers want to “feel among” and avoid being left out.

But is social media a blessing or a well-packaged disaster?

Imagine opening TikTok or YouTube to search for important information. Suddenly, you find yourself watching “Top 10 reasons why chickens walk like they owe rent”. Before you know it, you have watched several videos, exhausted your data, and forgotten what you originally wanted to learn. Just like that, social media has distracted you!

Advantages of social media

One major advantage of social media is that it provides access to information. Students can watch educational videos, learn new skills, and discover useful facts about the world.

It also makes communication easier. People can stay in touch with friends and family who live far away, share ideas, and learn from others.

Disadvantages of social media

Despite its benefits, social media has some disadvantages. One of them is addiction. Spending too much time online can make students neglect their schoolwork, household chores, and other important activities.

Social media can also be distracting. Constantly checking notifications and following trends can reduce concentration and cut into study time. In addition, the pressure to copy others may lead teenagers to make choices they wouldn’t otherwise make.

Final words

Social media is a useful tool, but how we use it makes all the difference. When used wisely, it can support learning, communication, and personal growth. However, excessive use can lead to addiction and distraction.

We should learn to control our time online instead of allowing social media to control us. After all, there is more to life than scrolling through videos!
