The duo emerged among the outstanding graduates of the university’s 2025/2026 academic session, having benefited from scholarships provided through Slum2School’s partnership with the institution.
Oseni graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science, recording an impressive Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.89. He also emerged as the second-best graduating student in his department.
Melawakou earned a degree in Mass Communication with a CGPA of 4.57, also finishing as the second-best graduating student in her department.
Their achievements reflect years of determination and resilience, having gained access to formal education through the intervention of Slum2School Africa.
Melawakou’s educational journey began in 2012 when the organisation enrolled her in school at the age of eight. Now 23, she overcame several challenges, including the threat of early marriage, which nearly forced her to abandon her education.
Following her graduation, she expressed gratitude for the opportunity to combine academic excellence with leadership, volunteering and personal development throughout her university years. She also disclosed her interest in journalism and reporting.
Oseni’s journey was similarly marked by determination and a passion for technology. He joined Slum2School’s digital learning programme in 2018 and distinguished himself as one of its top learners.
His interest in technology influenced his decision to study Computer Science. However, his final year was particularly difficult following the death of his mother, an experience that nearly made him give up on his studies.
Despite the setback, he persevered and graduated with First-Class Honours. He has also gained professional experience in technology, product management and programme coordination through internships and other engagements.
Both graduates completed their secondary education at Word of Faith Secondary School in 2022 before securing university scholarships through Slum2School’s partnership with Benson Idahosa University.
The founder of Slum2School Africa, Otto Orondaam, celebrated their achievements, describing their success as a powerful reminder of what children from underserved communities can accomplish when given access to education and opportunities.
Orondaam recalled that Melawakou was among the children whose circumstances inspired him to establish the organisation in 2011. He also praised Oseni for remaining committed to his education despite the personal tragedy he experienced.
He expressed appreciation to the management of Benson Idahosa University, including its Vice-Chancellor, Bishop Feb Idahosa, and other partners for supporting the students throughout their academic journey.
The graduates’ success highlights the importance of educational access, scholarship programmes, and sustained support in helping disadvantaged children overcome barriers and achieve their ambitions.
