The virtue of devotion: The story of Sherif and Hammed

By Tijani Faizah, JSS3, Ar-Razzaq International Schools

Once upon a time, in a peaceful community, there lived a man named Sherif. Sherif was a faithful servant of Allah, deeply devoted to his faith. Every day without fail, he observed his Solat (daily prayers) and dutifully fasted during the holy month of Ramadan.

Sherif had a lifelong childhood friend named Hammed. Unlike Sherif, Hammed was not as devoted to his faith, although he was a practising Muslim. Despite their differences in spiritual commitment, the two remained inseparable companions and worked together at the same establishment under an employer named Mr Sanni.

One afternoon, Mr Sanni called both young men into his office. He announced that he had an important task for them, one that required utmost honesty, dedication and fear of Allah.

To motivate them, Mr Sanni made a promising offer: “Anyone who carries out this assignment with absolute integrity and true fear of Allah will be rewarded with a prize of one million naira.”

Both Sherif and Hammed were thrilled and eager to hear the details of this life-changing assignment.

Mr Sanni explained the nature of the task. They were required to travel to a distant village called Gamni to hand-deliver a specific load to a recipient there.

After explaining the instructions, Mr Sanni handed each of the friends a separate load.

Moral lessons from the story

l Faithfulness in daily duties: Sherif’s consistent devotion to his daily prayers and fasting highlights the importance of maintaining spiritual discipline, even amid daily work routines.

l Integrity in the workplace: True diligence is tested not only by the task itself but also by how one conducts oneself when entrusted with responsibility.

l Equal opportunity, different outcomes: Both friends were given the same instructions and offered the same potential reward, showing that ultimate success depends on individual character, intention, and faith.

*Watch out for Part Two to see how Sherif and Hammed fare on their journey to Gamni!*
