The initiative, known as the Gemini Student Offer, is designed to give students access to advanced artificial intelligence tools without the financial burden of paying for a subscription.

According to Google, the offer is available to students aged 18 and above enrolled in accredited universities, polytechnics and colleges of education in Nigeria. The subscription is valued at N92,400 per student.

Students who benefited from the programme during the previous academic year can also renew their access for another 12 months after verifying their student status.

The package provides access to several AI-powered learning and productivity features, including higher usage limits, Gemini Live, Deep Research, unlimited file uploads and 400GB of cloud storage.

Students can also use AI tools designed specifically for learning. Gemini’s Guided Learning mode is intended to function more like a digital tutor, providing explanations, hints and guiding questions rather than simply handing students answers.

Google said the approach was tested in a DeepMind study involving 1,763 students in West African schools. According to the company, participating students recorded learning gains equivalent to between 1.2 and 1.7 years over an eight-week period.

The technology can also support students working with lecture materials. Gemini Study Notebooks, for instance, can turn course materials into quizzes and lesson plans, while other tools can assist with research, brainstorming, diagrams and academic projects.

Google said the programme is part of its effort to remove financial barriers preventing students from accessing advanced AI technology.

The company’s Director for West and East Africa, Olumide Balogun, described AI as a major technological shift and said Nigeria’s young population could benefit significantly from learning how to use the technology.

The development comes as artificial intelligence becomes increasingly important in education and employment, making digital literacy an increasingly valuable skill for students preparing to enter the labour market.

However, the availability of AI tools also places greater responsibility on students and institutions to encourage responsible academic use.

Google said the initiative is intended to support learning rather than academic dishonesty, with Guided Learning designed to help students understand concepts instead of simply providing answers.

For Nigerian students, the offer could provide access to tools that were previously too expensive for many to use regularly.

As the new academic session approaches, the initiative could give a new generation of Nigerian learners an opportunity to explore artificial intelligence not merely as a technological novelty, but as a tool for research, learning and career-choices-why-early-planning-matters/">career development.
