The licence was formally presented to the promoters of the university in Abuja on July 24, 2026, marking the transition of City University Abuja from a proposed institution to a fully licensed private postgraduate university.

Speaking at the presentation, the Executive Secretary of the NUC, Prof. Abdullahi Yusufu Ribadu, described the approval as an important milestone for the institution. He said the university had successfully satisfied the regulatory requirements for establishing a private postgraduate university in Nigeria.

Ribadu urged the management of the university to maintain the standards required by the commission and remain committed to quality assurance, academic excellence and compliance with regulatory guidelines.

He also disclosed that the university’s designated mentor institution would provide technical assistance and institutional support to facilitate its successful take-off and sustainable development.

Reacting to the approval, a member of the university’s Board of Trustees, Uzoechina Agu, commended the NUC for what he described as a rigorous and transparent licensing process.

Agu said the institution would be guided by academic excellence, innovation, integrity and accountability as it works to produce graduates capable of responding to the demands of the modern global economy.

He added that the licence represented the fulfilment of a long-standing vision to establish a world-class institution focused on postgraduate education, research, entrepreneurship and leadership development.

According to him, City University Abuja is prepared to commence academic activities, with modern facilities, qualified academic and administrative staff and student support systems already in place.

The university is expected to provide a technology-driven learning environment with emphasis on innovation and industry relevance, while preparing its students for opportunities in Nigeria and beyond.

With the approval, City University Abuja becomes part of Nigeria’s growing number of licensed private universities and is set to commence full academic operations in the Federal Capital Territory.
