The students are taking part in the 2025/2026 Huawei ICT Competition Global Finals, a prestigious international event that brings together some of the brightest young minds in information and communication technology, including students specialising in networking, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and software development.

The Kenyan delegation earned its place at the global stage after excelling in national and regional qualifying rounds, outperforming thousands of competitors from across Africa. Their qualification highlights Kenya’s growing reputation as a hub for digital innovation and technology talent on the continent.

Among the students flying Kenya’s flag in China are representatives from leading institutions, including the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, Kenyatta University, Mount Kenya University, Machakos University, and the Co-operative University of Kenya.

Education and government officials have praised the students for their achievement, describing their selection as a testament to hard work, innovation, and the increasing quality of ICT education in Kenya. Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi congratulated the students and urged them to represent the country with excellence on the global stage.

According to organisers, this year’s competition has attracted a record number of participants worldwide, making it one of the most competitive editions in the event’s history. The contest features multiple categories, including computing, cloud technologies, networking, programming, innovation, and entrepreneurship.

Technology company Huawei said the competition aims to equip young people with practical digital skills while exposing them to emerging technologies that are shaping the future of the global economy. The programme has also helped students gain industry experience, professional certifications, and international exposure.

Kenya has enjoyed notable success in previous editions of the competition, with student teams winning top prizes in computing, cloud, and innovation categories. Those achievements have strengthened the country’s standing among Africa’s leading technology and innovation centres.

As the finals continue in Shenzhen, the Kenyan students will compete against top technology talents from around the world in a bid to bring home global honours and further showcase the country’s growing influence in the digital and ICT sector.
