Examination malpractice is any dishonest or illegal act carried out by a student before, during, or after an examination to gain an unfair advantage. It is a serious problem in modern society. It affects not only the students who engage in it but also those who work hard and remain honest.
Some students copy from their classmates during exams, while others smuggle short notes (e-copy) into the exam hall. Over time, examination malpractice has become a major issue in Nigeria, affecting the quality of education and moral behaviour.
Moreover, it can lead to cancellation of results, suspension, or expulsion from school. It also causes loss of reputation and self-respect. Students who engage in it often become less knowledgeable, as it reduces their level of understanding. In serious examinations such as JAMB, WAEC, and NECO, strict punishments are applied. Examination malpractice destroys integrity and future success. Honest hard work remains the best path.
Furthermore, it creates unfairness in the education system, as students who refuse to prepare and instead cheat during exams may end up getting the same grades as those who studied hard and prepared well.
The main causes of examination malpractice include poor preparation, fear of failure, laziness, and lack of confidence. To avoid it, students should study regularly, prepare ahead of time, resist peer pressure, believe in their abilities, and always write what they know.
In conclusion, examination malpractice destroys integrity and future success. Honesty and hard work are always the best ways to succeed. Cheating reduces confidence and increases laziness because students begin to doubt their own ability. With self-belief, preparation, and confidence, success is possible.
