Lagos students urged to pursue career in estate management

From Dotun Omisakin, Lagos

Students of Wasimi Community High School, Lagos, have been encouraged to consider estate management as a viable and rewarding career path.

The advice was given by Mrs Nike Ogunjobi, Coordinator of the Visitation Committee, Nigerian Institution of Estate Surveyors and Valuers (NIESV), Lagos State Branch Education Sub-Committee, during a one-day career guidance visit to the school.

Ogunjobi explained that choosing the right career requires clarity of goals and an understanding of one’s interests and strengths.

She introduced the students to the mnemonic “CAREER,” which stands for Clarity of goals and vision, Acquire skills and knowledge, Reach out to mentors, Explore opportunities, Excel in your field, and Reflect and adjust your goals.

According to her, estate management is a professional field that offers long-term opportunities in areas such as property valuation, property development, management, and real estate agency.

She noted that the course is available in many Nigerian universities, including federal, state, and private institutions.

Highlighting the subject requirements, she stated that students interested in pursuing estate management should focus on English Language, Mathematics, Economics, Geography, and Biology.

She added for JAMB, they should register for English, Mathematics, Economics, and one of Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geography, or Agricultural Science.

“Estate management is a profession that allows individuals to build not just a career but also a business and a lifelong profession,” Ogunjobi said.

She further advised students to consider factors such as interest, passion, job market demand, personal goals, and growth opportunities when choosing their career paths.
