Career choices: what do you want to become?

By Gloria-Joy Funsho-Adebayo, SS1 Arts, Lordswill Academy, Abuja

Choosing a career can be difficult, especially when there are so many options to consider. You may dream of becoming a doctor, teacher, lawyer, journalist, artist, or even an entrepreneur. But how do you know which career is right for you?

A good place to start is by understanding yourself. Ask yourself these questions:

  1. Which school subject do I enjoy the most?
  2. What am I naturally good at?
  3. What do I enjoy doing in my free time?
  4. Which career interests me enough to want to learn more about it?
  5. What skill would I like to improve?
  6. Do I prefer working with people, numbers, ideas, or things?

Your answers can help you discover your interests, strengths and possible career paths. You can also speak with your parents, teachers or a career counsellor for guidance.

Remember:

– You do not have to figure out your entire future right now.

– It is okay for your interests to change as you grow.

– Do not choose a career simply because your friends like it.

– Try different activities and discover what you enjoy.

– Be willing to learn new skills and explore new opportunities.

Choosing a career is a journey of discovery. Take your time, believe in yourself, and remember that your journey is unique.
