The Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, described the development as a major milestone in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda for education, healthcare and national security.

Alausa said the college was established to strengthen military healthcare, train specialised medical personnel and improve access to quality healthcare for members of the Armed Forces.

“AFCOM-HS was set up to strengthen military healthcare, develop specialised medical manpower and advance national security,” he said.

He described the institution as the first of its kind in Nigeria and one of the few in Africa established to train military cadets in Medicine and Surgery, Nursing and other related medical disciplines.

The minister said the initiative also marked progress under the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative, which is driving reforms in the country’s education sector.

Located within the 68 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital in Yaba, Lagos, AFCOM-HS has received approval from the National Universities Commission (NUC) to offer Medicine and Surgery, leading to the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS), and Nursing Science, leading to the Bachelor of Nursing Science (B.NSc.).

The college will combine medical education with military officer training, equipping students with clinical knowledge, professional ethics and leadership skills to improve healthcare delivery to military personnel and strengthen national health security.

Alausa commended the Ministry of Defence, the Armed Forces leadership, the technical working group led by Brigadier General Dr Idris Babatunde Solebo, JAMB, the NUC and relevant professional regulatory bodies for their contributions to establishing the institution.

He reaffirmed the Federal Ministry of Education’s commitment to academic oversight and quality assurance.

Prospective candidates were advised to consult the official AFCOM-HS and JAMB platforms for information on eligibility, application procedures, military selection requirements and admission schedules.
