The Physics Prize is the second Nobel award to be announced this year, following the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, which was awarded on Monday to Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel for discoveries concerning light-gated ion channels and optogenetics.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences is responsible for selecting the laureates in Physics and Chemistry. The academy has kept the names of the 2026 Physics nominees confidential, meaning names circulating ahead of the announcement do not represent an official shortlist.

Last year, the Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to John Clarke, Michel H. Devoret and John M. Martinis for their discovery of macroscopic quantum mechanical tunnelling and quantisation of energy in an electric circuit. Their work demonstrated quantum effects in systems large enough to be held in the hand.

The 2026 Nobel Prize announcements will continue throughout the week, with the Chemistry Prize scheduled for Wednesday, October 7, the Literature Prize on Thursday, October 8, and the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday, October 9. The Prize in Economic Sciences will be announced on October 12.

Each Nobel Prize in 2026 carries a cash award of 12 million Swedish kronor, equivalent to about $1.2 million, in addition to a medal and diploma. The prize can be shared by up to three laureates.

The announcement of the Physics laureate is expected to draw attention from the global scientific community as researchers and institutions await recognition of work considered to have made a significant contribution to the field of physics and humanity.

The Nobel was awarded “for the discovery of high-energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin,” the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said.

Francis Halzen was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics on Tuesday for the discovery of high-energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said.

Mr. Halzen is a physics professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He was born in 1944 in Tienen, Belgium.

John Clarke, Michel H. Devoret and John M. Martinis shared the prize for work that made the behaviors of the subatomic world observable in a system large enough to see with the naked eye.
