The Federal University Dutse (FUD), Jigawa State, has expelled 12 students over offences including cultism, armed robbery, phone theft and drug abuse.
Five other students were rusticated, while another five were issued warning letters over various offences, including cyberbullying, attempted sexual assault and drug abuse.

The sanctions followed the review of a report from the university’s 20th Students’ Disciplinary Committee meeting by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ahmad Mohammad Gumel.
According to the Acting Director of Public Affairs of the university, Abdullahi Yahya, the sanctions took immediate effect after they were approved by the Vice-Chancellor.
The expelled students were found guilty of different offences, including criminal conspiracy, armed robbery, phone theft, robbery, cult-related activities and drug abuse on campus.
The university had earlier sought the support of the Jigawa State Police Command in tackling cult-related activities and other anti-social behaviour among students.
The appeal was made during a visit by the vice-chancellor, members of the Senate, management and staff of the university to the state’s Commissioner of Police, Tijjani Murtala, on August 13.
Five students were also rusticated over offences relating to attempted sexual assault and cyberbullying.
Four of the students were rusticated for two semesters, while another student was rusticated for one semester.
Another five students received warning letters for offences including cyberbullying, attempted sexual assault and drug abuse committed off campus.
The university said the disciplinary measures were part of its efforts to maintain discipline and protect students within and outside the campus.
Yahya said the university would not tolerate criminal activities or behaviour that could damage its reputation.
He said FUD had “zero tolerance” for criminality, cultism, drug abuse and harassment.
The university also urged students to obey the law and avoid activities that could affect their education and future.
It called on parents and guardians to advise their children and wards to stay away from activities that could disrupt their studies or bring disciplinary action.
The university said it remained committed to providing a safe and conducive environment where students could learn and develop good character.
