The National Examinations Council (NECO) has released the results of the 2026 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) Internal, with 84.70 per cent of candidates obtaining at least five credits irrespective of their performance in English Language and Mathematics.

The NECO Registrar and Chief Executive, Prof. Dantani Wushishi, announced the results on Thursday at the council’s headquarters in Minna, Niger State.
According to Wushishi, 1,378,048 candidates registered for the examination, comprising 682,352 males and 695,696 females, while 1,371,992 candidates eventually sat for the examination.
Of the candidates who sat for the examination, 1,162,118 (84.70 per cent) obtained five credits and above without necessarily having credits in English Language and Mathematics.
However, when English Language and Mathematics were included among the five required credits, the number dropped to 804,948 candidates, representing 58.67 per cent. The figure is a 2.64 percentage-point decline from the 60.26 per cent recorded in the 2025 examination.
The 2026 examination was conducted from June 15 to July 23 across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, as well as six foreign countries: Benin Republic, Equatorial Guinea, Niger Republic, Côte d’Ivoire, Togo and Saudi Arabia. The nationwide marking exercise was conducted between August 17 and September 4.
The council also reported a significant reduction in examination malpractice. Wushishi said 1,406 candidates were involved in various forms of malpractice during the 2026 examination, compared with 3,878 candidates recorded in 2025, representing a 64.74 per cent decrease.
The registrar attributed the improvement to measures adopted by the council to strengthen examination security and quality assurance, as well as collaboration with security agencies and other stakeholders.
He particularly acknowledged the support of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and the Department of State Services in maintaining discipline and protecting the integrity of the examination.
Wushishi also disclosed that 1,334 candidates with special needs participated in the 2026 SSCE, as the council continued to provide measures aimed at making its examinations more inclusive.
The NECO registrar assured candidates, parents, schools and other stakeholders that the council would continue to improve its examination processes and uphold the credibility and integrity of its assessments.
