UI to Shred Unclaimed Certificates After 10 Years

The University of Ibadan (UI) has announced that certificates left uncollected for more than 10 years will be shredded as part of new guidelines governing the collection of academic documents by graduates.

The university disclosed this in a special bulletin dated September 15, 2026, and signed by its Registrar, Ganiyu Saliu.

Under the new guidelines, graduates are required to collect their Statements of Result within six months after being notified that the documents are ready.

Graduates who fail to collect their Statements of Result within the stipulated six-month period will be required to pay a non-collection penalty of N2,500 before the document can be released.

The university said the Statement of Result would remain valid for two years from the date of issuance and would serve as an interim academic record pending the collection of the graduate’s certificate.

According to the institution, certificates constitute the official and permanent evidence of graduation and qualification and should be collected within the specified period.

The university stated that certificates would be available for collection from the date of convocation until one year afterwards. Graduates collecting their certificates within this initial period will pay a statutory issuance and collection fee of N7,500.

However, graduates who delay collection beyond one year will incur additional penalties. Certificates collected after one year but within five years will attract a N25,000 non-collection penalty, while those collected after five years but within 10 years will attract a N50,000 penalty.

The university clarified that the penalties for late collection are separate from the N7,500 statutory certificate issuance and collection fee.

It warned that any certificate that remains uncollected for more than 10 years will be liable to shredding.

The institution urged graduates and other relevant stakeholders to take note of the new guidelines and ensure that academic documents are collected within the stipulated periods to avoid penalties or loss of the certificates.
