NABTEB Enrollment Surge Signals Growing Interest in Technical Education

The number of candidates enrolling for Nigeria’s business and technical examinations has increased significantly, signalling renewed interest in practical and vocational education across the country.

The National Business and Technical Examinations Board disclosed that 100,069 candidates registered for the June and July 2026 National Business Certificate and National Technical Certificate examinations.

The figure represents an increase of 7,193 candidates compared with the 92,876 registrations recorded in 2025.

The number of examination centres also expanded from 1,892 in 2025 to 2,144 in 2026, creating additional opportunities for candidates to participate in the examinations.

Candidates were examined in 16 engineering trades, seven construction trades, nine miscellaneous trades, four business subjects and 16 general education subjects.

According to NABTEB Registrar and Chief Executive Officer, Dr Mohammed Aminu Mohammed, 97,867 registered candidates eventually sat for the examinations, representing a 97.80 per cent attendance rate.

He described the increase as evidence of growing interest in business and technical education.

The board also reported a significant improvement in results, with 79,504 candidates obtaining five credits and above including English Language and Mathematics, compared with 61,104 candidates in 2025.

The development comes as Nigeria continues to place greater emphasis on technical and vocational education as a pathway towards practical skills, employment and entrepreneurship.

The growing enrollment could therefore signal a gradual shift in the perception of technical education, particularly among young Nigerians seeking skills that can translate directly into professional opportunities.
