Thousands of Nigerian candidates seeking another opportunity to obtain their senior secondary school certificate are set to participate in the 2026 National Examinations Council Senior School Certificate Examination for external candidates.

The examination, popularly known as NECO GCE, will be conducted under a dual-mode arrangement combining hybrid Computer Based Examination and Pen and Paper Examination.
According to the examination council, registration for the 2026 external examination commenced in July and will continue into November, giving prospective candidates time to complete the registration process ahead of the examination.
The examination itself is scheduled to hold from November 25 to December 12, 2026.
The external examination remains an important pathway for candidates who want to obtain or improve their senior secondary school qualifications outside the regular school examination system.
Candidates include school leavers seeking better results, individuals who were unable to obtain the required credits in previous examinations and others who need additional subjects for admission or employment purposes.
The introduction of the dual examination format also reflects the country’s continuing transition towards computer-based testing.
However, candidates will not all take their papers in exactly the same format, as the examination arrangement covers both computer-based and paper-based components.
NECO has urged candidates to pay close attention to the registration requirements and ensure that the information supplied during registration is accurate.
Candidates are also expected to obtain their examination timetable and retain their photocard, which will be required for identification and admission into the examination venue.
The council has warned that unclear photographs on examination photocards may create problems at examination centres.
With the examination period approaching, candidates have been advised to begin serious preparation rather than wait until the final weeks.
For thousands of Nigerians, the NECO GCE represents more than another examination.
It can provide a second chance, reopen the door to tertiary education and help candidates move beyond an earlier academic setback.
