Rural housing refers to the homes found in villages. In Nigeria, many people live in rural areas where there are farms, forests, and open land. These houses are usually different from those found in urban (city) areas

Rural houses are often simple and built using materials available in the environment. Some common types include:

Mud houses: Built with red or brown mud mixed with water. They are cool during hot weather.

Thatched houses: Roofed with dry grass, palm leaves, or straw.

Bamboo and wooden houses: Made using wood and bamboo poles tied together.

In Nigeria, the Hausa people are known for their beautifully decorated mud houses. The designs on the walls reflect culture and tradition.

People use locally available materials because they are affordable and effective. Mud, wood, and grass help keep homes cool in hot weather. These houses are also often built low to withstand strong winds and heavy rain.

Many rural houses have large compounds where families grow vegetables, keep animals like chickens, and play. In some areas, there is limited electricity and pipe-borne water, so people use lanterns, wells, and firewood for cooking.

Even though rural houses are simple, they are strong, comfortable, and supportive of close family and community living.
