One second you’re laughing like a hyena, next you’re crying over a pen that rolled under the bed. Your mum asks you to help with the dishes, and it suddenly feels like she doesn’t understand you AT ALL. You snap. Then two minutes later, you’re like… why did I even say that? Welcome to the mystery of moods. Or as I like to call it: The Hormone Games — Teen Edition.
It’s Not Just You — It’s Science!
Let’s talk about puberty, shall we? Yeah, yeah. That word again. But listen, your body is doing a serious factory reset and upgrade at the same time. And part of the problem (or blessing?) is sitting right there in your brain. Specifically, your frontal lobe.
The frontal lobe is like your inner manager; it handles planning, decision-making, reasoning, and controlling your impulses. But here’s the catch: it doesn’t finish developing until you’re in your mid-20s. Yup, TWENTY-FIVE.
So while you’re trying to decide if you should forgive your friend for ignoring your WhatsApp status, your brain is like; “Sorry, emotional regulation is still buffering…”
So why am I all over the place?
Because you’re growing. Hormones (those tiny chemicals in your body) are running the show. They affect your mood, sleep, skin, hunger, energy, and even how confident you feel. They’re doing what they’re supposed to do, but sometimes, it feels like they’re trolling you.
One day you feel like talking to everyone.
Next, you just want to hide under your blanket and stare at the wall. You say things you don’t mean. Or cry and you’re not even sure why. And it’s okay. You’re not weird. You’re not broken. You’re just becoming YOU.
Let’s check in — how’s your mood?
Take this short mood quiz. No right or wrong answers — just honesty.
- When I wake up in the morning, I usually feel…
- Like I can conquer the world.
- Like staying in bed forever.
- Neutral. Let me brush my teeth first.
- When someone annoys me…
- I stay chill.
- I explode and regret it 3 seconds later.
- I write them off and act like they don’t exist.
- I don’t know why, but sometimes I just feel like…
- Crying.
- Screaming.
- All of the above. With popcorn.
If you picked C a lot, congratulations — you’re a normal teenager.
So what can you do about it?
Here are some practical ways to ride the hormone rollercoaster without falling off:
Name it to tame it: Feel a storm coming? Say it out loud. “I feel angry” or “I’m just sad today.” Naming your emotion helps your brain process it.
Do a brain dump: Grab a notebook. Write everything you’re feeling — even if it’s random gibberish. Let it out. No one has to read it.
Move your body: You don’t have to jog at 5 a.m. like that auntie. Dance, walk, do push-ups, jump around. Physical activity helps burn off stress and resets your brain chemicals.
Talk to someone: A trusted adult, older sibling, or even your teacher. You’d be surprised how many of them went through exactly the same thing.
Take faith breaks: Even if you’re not the most “religious” person, pausing for reflection, quiet prayer, or just saying Alhamdulillah or Thank you, God can seriously calm the storm inside. And yes, it’s okay to talk to God like He’s your Friend. Because He is.
“But nobody gets me!!!”
We know. We hear you. And guess what?
Everyone feels misunderstood sometimes. Even adults. Especially adults.
But that doesn’t mean no one cares. It just means communication takes practice. You don’t have to explain your entire brain in one go. Start with “Can I tell you something weird I’m feeling?” — and go from there.
Real Talk: You’re Not a Robot. You won’t always have it together. And that’s okay. Teenhood is not a training ground for perfection, it’s the season of figuring it out. Even your mistakes are part of the process.
So when you snap at your friend, feel bad, apologize, and try again, that’s growth. When you feel like everyone’s moving faster than you, but you still keep going, that’s strength.
And when you feel nothing, that’s also a valid feeling. You’re allowed to pause. You’re allowed to rest.
(Want to Try This?)
Create your own “Mood Menu” for the week:-
Day – Mood – What Helped
Mon. .Writing in my journal.
Final Words :-
~ Hormones are annoying. Emotions are weird. But both are normal.
~ You’re not too much. You’re just learning your own volume.
~ You’re not broken. You’re becoming.
So go easy on yourself. Breathe. Laugh at how dramatic you get sometimes. Forgive yourself. Try again. And if all else fails — take a nap. Sometimes, a nap is the answer.
