School owners and educationists have rallied support for the development of school sports in the primary and secondary schools education sector.
The proprietress of Subtle Kids School in Akute, Ogun State, Oluwatoyin Latunde, in a statement urged private and public sponsorship for the development of school sports for the nation to realise its huge potential in sports and in human capital development.
Latunde, who, according to the statement, spoke at the second Biennial Inter House Sports Competition of Suble Kids School held recently, stated that school owners cannot provide the resources and infrastructure for the development of sports in the schools as there is a lot to do be done in discovering the raw talent of students who are good in sports and honing them while in the basic schools.
She called for a strategic policy by the ministry of education and that of sports in ensuring there are sporting fields and competitions for discovery of talents.
Latunde said, “There is still a lot to do to develop school sports as we can all see at the inter-house sports competition, our students have longed for a platform to showcase talents.
“Both public and private schools need a form of strategic support to develop school sports through a deliberate attempt by the agencies of government if we really want to tap the potentials we have in our youths.”
“Most schools do not have their own fields for pupils to train and also the resources to support them as we are already doing a lot in educating them in STEMS and vocational studies.”
“As a member of National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS) Ogun State Chapter, we have looked at this and tried to contribute our part in school sports development.:
Also the proprietress of Riverside Schools, Mrs Adewuyi Oladunni, a guest at the event noted that it was imperative for all interested parties to support school sports and come with a plan to realise this in tandem with best practices, even as premium education of the students is given utmost attention as well.
