The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria has granted final accreditation to Osun State University, Osogbo, allowing it to graduate medical students.

The announcement was made during a visit by the council’s Registrar, Fatimah Kyari, and the accreditation team to the Osun State Government House in Osogbo. During the visit, Governor Ademola Adeleke welcomed the decision, calling it a major milestone for the state-owned institution.

According to a statement from the governor’s spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, Adeleke praised the council for granting approval and pledged continued support to strengthen the university’s academic programmes. Kyari, represented by the Deputy Registrar Nnaemeka Nwakanma, said the accreditation came after the university improved its facilities and staffing at the College of Medicine.

“This team has just approved and granted final full accreditation to the medical school. It didn’t come easy,” Nwakanma said.

He added that the council has strict standards for medical education and only allows institutions with the right facilities and qualified personnel to train doctors.

With the accreditation, Osun State University can now admit 150 medical students, placing it on the same level as the University of Lagos and other leading schools in Nigeria. Governor Adeleke said the state will continue to invest in expanding medical training before the next accreditation review.
