FG releases approved textbooks for schools

The Federal Ministry of Education has released the final list of approved textbooks for use in Nigerian schools between 2026 and 2028.

The ministry announced this in a statement issued by its Director of Press and Public Relations, Boriowo Folasade, after completing the first phase of its national textbook ranking exercise.

The approved list covers textbooks for Primary 1, Primary 4, Junior Secondary School 1, and Senior Secondary School 1.

Each approved textbook has been given a unique ranking/QR tracking code. The code contains important information about the book, including its title, author, publisher, and year of publication.

According to the ministry, the new system will make it easier to identify and monitor approved textbooks and improve accountability in the selection and use of instructional materials.

The exercise was carried out under the leadership of the Minister of Education, Maruf Tunji Alausa, and the Minister of State for Education, Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad. The final list was approved by Alausa.

The ministry said the extra work involved in creating and assigning the tracking codes contributed to the time needed to complete and check the final list.

The textbook ranking exercise will be carried out in phases.

The second phase will cover textbooks for Primary 2, Primary 5, JSS 2, and SS 2.

The ministry urged publishers, schools, education authorities, and procurement agencies to use the approved list when selecting and buying textbooks for the affected classes.

It said the exercise was part of the federal government’s efforts to improve the quality of learning materials available to students and teachers.
