The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has dismissed a viral list circulating on social media claiming to identify 50 schools whose 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results were allegedly withheld over examination malpractice.

The examination body described the document as fake and urged candidates, school administrators, parents and the general public to disregard the misinformation, stressing that it did not originate from the Council.
In a statement, WAEC clarified that it has not published any list of affected schools following the release of the 2026 WASSCE results. The Council advised the public to rely only on information shared through its official communication channels and accredited media outlets.
The clarification follows widespread speculation after WAEC announced that it had withheld the results of 167,486 candidates over alleged examination malpractice. The Council explained that withheld results are still under investigation and do not automatically mean that the affected candidates or schools have been found guilty.
WAEC noted that investigations into suspected malpractice are conducted in accordance with its examination regulations, after which appropriate decisions are taken. Candidates whose results are withheld may have them released if they are cleared during the review process, while confirmed cases could lead to cancellation of results.
The Council also warned members of the public against spreading unverified information capable of causing unnecessary panic among students, schools and parents. It reiterated that official updates on examination results and malpractice investigations would only be communicated through its verified platforms.
WAEC reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the credibility and integrity of its examinations while ensuring that all reported cases of malpractice are handled fairly, transparently and in line with established procedures.
