Nigerian students have recorded an outstanding performance at the 2026 Singapore International Mathematics Olympiad Challenge (SIMOC), winning multiple gold, silver and bronze medals to reinforce the country’s growing reputation in global mathematics competitions. The remarkable feat has been celebrated as another milestone for Nigerian education and STEM excellence.

Leading Team Nigeria’s impressive performance was Agu Chukwuka of Grundtvig International Secondary School, Oba, Anambra State, who emerged as one of the competition’s top performers after winning two gold medals and one bronze medal across the Mathematics Olympiad Contest, Math Warriors and Math Master Mind events. His achievement placed him among the best contestants at the international competition.
Other Nigerian students also delivered exceptional performances. Nwawulu Chimgozirim Kevin, also of Grundtvig International Secondary School, secured a gold medal in the Math Master Mind (Lower Secondary Division), while Stanley Iduate Samson of Graceland International School and Adepetu Mofopefoluwa Oluwasemilore of Jephthah Comprehensive Secondary School, Port Harcourt, each won gold medals in the Math Master Mind (Upper Secondary Division).
The Nigerian contingent also returned home with several silver and bronze medals across different categories, reflecting the depth of talent among the country’s young mathematicians and the increasing competitiveness of Nigerian students on the global academic stage.
According to the organisers, the 2026 Singapore International Mathematics Olympiad Challenge brought together 2,285 students from 40 countries and territories, representing more than 1,100 schools worldwide. The competition tested participants’ mathematical reasoning, problem-solving, teamwork and strategic thinking through a series of individual and collaborative contests.
The organisers described Nigeria’s performance as evidence of the country’s growing investment in quality education, effective mentorship and international academic exposure. They noted that the achievements further strengthen Nigeria’s position as an emerging force in global mathematics and STEM education.
Education stakeholders have applauded the students’ accomplishments, describing the medals as an inspiration to young Nigerians and proof that with proper support, mentorship and exposure, Nigerian learners can compete successfully with their peers on the international stage. They also called for increased investment in mathematics education and talent development to sustain the country’s growing success in global academic competitions.
