Eid al-Adha is a festival celebrated by Muslims around the world. It takes place during the blessed month of Dhul-Hijjah. The celebration is based on the story of Prophet Ibrahim (A.S).
Allah commanded Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son as a test of faith. When his son learned about it, he encouraged his father to obey Allah, saying, “O my father, obey your Lord and carry out the sacrifice.”
However, Allah replaced his son with a ram to be sacrificed instead. Prophet Ibrahim was grateful that he did not lose his son. Since then, Muslims remember this event by sacrificing animals such as rams during Eid al-Adha.
When is Eid al-Adha?
Eid al-Adha is observed on the 10th day of Dhul-Hijjah. On this day, Muslims are encouraged to wear their best clothes and celebrate with gratitude. It is also recommended to fast during the first nine days of Dhul-Hijjah. This fasting is believed to bring forgiveness for past and future sins, In Sha Allah.
Why do we slaughter animals?
The sacrifice is done to honour the obedience of Prophet Ibrahim (A.S). Muslims may slaughter animals such as rams, cows, camels, or sheep, depending on what they can afford.
What happens on Eid day?
On Eid day, Muslims gather at the Eid mosque or prayer grounds for special prayers. After the prayer, they listen to the khutbah (sermon) and then return home to celebrate with family and friends.
