Onize secured the top position after several rounds of debates involving students from 24 universities across the country. The competition began on April 15.

In a statement released on Monday, Amnesty International Nigeria Country Director Isa Sanusi said Naomi Innocent Chikwuado of Imo State University emerged first runner-up, while Obodoefuna Ijeoma Cynthia of Madonna University came third.

Uwakfmfon Moses Etim of the University of Uyo finished as the fourth runner-up.

Other universities that made it to the final stage of the competition included the University of Port Harcourt and Veritas University.

The statement also noted that Jonathan Alewa from Gombe State University gave a special presentation on poverty and human rights.

Sanusi said the debate was aimed at encouraging young people to think deeply about human rights, justice, and accountability.

“This debate continues to grow in impact and reach each year. As a global human rights organisation, Amnesty International is committed to empowering young people to shape the discourse around justice, accountability, and human dignity,” he said.

The competition is now in its fourth year. Last year, Miss Goodluck Akinlawon of the University of Ibadan won the 2025 edition of the debate competition.
