Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) among youths

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, popularly known as ADHD, is a condition that affects many young people today. It is a neurodevelopmental disorder that makes it difficult for individuals to concentrate, control their impulses, and remain calm for a long period of time.

Among youth, especially students, ADHD can affect academic performance, behaviour, and relationships with others.

One of the major causes of ADHD is genetics. Research shows that ADHD can run in families. If a parent or close relative has the condition, a child may also develop it. Another cause is differences in brain development and function, particularly in areas responsible for attention and self-control.

Environmental factors such as exposure to harmful substances during pregnancy, poor nutrition, or extreme stress at an early age may also contribute to the development of ADHD.

Although ADHD cannot always be completely prevented, some preventive measures can reduce the risk. Proper prenatal care, good nutrition, and avoiding harmful substances during pregnancy are important steps.

Parents and guardians should provide a structured and supportive environment for children. Early detection is also very important. When symptoms are noticed early, intervention can begin before the condition worsens.

Possible solutions to managing ADHD among youth include behavioural therapy, counselling, and academic support. Teachers can help by using clear instructions, structured routines, and positive reinforcement.

In some cases, medical treatment prescribed by a qualified doctor may be necessary. Support from family members, teachers, and the community is essential in helping young people with ADHD reach their full potential.

In conclusion, ADHD is a real condition that affects many youths, but with proper understanding, early intervention, and adequate support, those affected can live successful and productive lives.
