Workers’ Day, also called Labour Day or May Day, is celebrated on the 1st of May every year in many countries, including Nigeria. It is a special day to honour all workers for their efforts and contributions to the growth of society.
Why Do We Celebrate Workers’ Day?
Workers’ Day began a long time ago when workers demanded better working conditions, fair pay, and fewer working hours. Many of them worked too long and were not treated well. Over time, they united and protested peacefully. This led to changes in laws to protect workers. Today, we remember their struggle and celebrate their victory.
Who Are Workers?
Workers include teachers, doctors, nurses, farmers, cleaners, drivers, police officers, and many others. They help to build and support our communities. Without workers, our lives would be much harder.
How is Workers’ Day celebrated?
In Nigeria, Workers’ Day is a public holiday. There are parades, speeches, and events held to recognise workers. Leaders of different labour unions also use the day to talk about workers’ rights and call for improvements.
Workers’ Day is a time to appreciate and thank the people who keep our world running. As students, we should respect all workers and understand the value of hard work.
