UniAbuja Goes Tough On Cultism, Drug Abuse, Thuggery

By Rosemary Etim Bassey

The management of the University of Abuja, now known as Yakubu Gowon University, has stepped up efforts to fight cultism, drug abuse, and thuggery on campus. The school says it is taking strong action to make sure students can learn in a safe and peaceful environment.

The university took these strict measures, leading to the expulsion of 28 students, and the withdrawal of certificates of 15 others.According to the institution’s spokesperson, Dr. Habib Yakoob, who is the Acting Director of Information and University Relations, the Senate of the university made the decision at its 191st meeting. The Senate carefully reviewed a report from the Students Disciplinary Committee, which investigated several cases of wrongdoing.

The affected students were found guilty of offences such as cult-related activities, examination malpractice, drug possession, assault, theft, conspiracy, and even falsifying ‘O’ Level results for admission. The university said such actions go against its rules and values.

However, not all students accused were punished. Nine students were cleared after investigations showed they were not guilty. Another 33 students received warnings for lesser offences, including fighting and breaking hostel rules.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Hakeem Fawehinmi, said the university will not compromise its academic standards or campus safety. He explained that discipline is important, but the school is also improving counselling and student orientation programmes to guide students toward responsible behaviour.

The university says its goal is simple: protect students, promote honesty, and create a safe place where everyone can focus on learning and building a bright future.
