The shadow in the hall: Why exam malpractice is a trap, not a shortcut

by Amar

Examination malpractice has become a silent epidemic in our schools. Many students today see cheating, through microchips, smuggled notes, or digital help—as a smart way to succeed. However, as a JSS3 student preparing to move to senior secondary school, I have learnt that cheating is not a shortcut to success; it is a dangerous dead end.

Examinations are meant to test a student’s understanding. When a student cheats, the grade on the result slip becomes meaningless. A student may score an “A” in mathematics or English, but if they cannot solve a simple equation or write a paragraph on their own, that grade is useless. Education is meant to give knowledge and skills, not just marks on paper.

At Shehu Shagari Model Islamic Centre, we are taught to value honesty and good character. Cheating destroys a student’s conscience and sense of integrity. It also weakens confidence, encourages laziness, and wastes time that should be spent studying.

The consequences of cheating go beyond the exam hall. Students caught may face expulsion or result cancellation. More importantly, cheating creates a weak foundation. A JSS3 student who cheats may struggle in SSS1 because they missed essential lessons. On a larger scale, a society built by leaders who cheated in school is a society at risk.

The solution is proper preparation. Forming study groups, following a reading timetable, listening in class, and asking questions are far better paths to success than any hidden note. Failing honestly is better than passing dishonestly.

Examination malpractice threatens education, character, and the future. As the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “Whoever cheats is not one of us.” Let us protect our integrity and the image of our school by saying no to cheating.
