The effects of pollution

By Emmanuel Awhen

Human activities harm the earth because they introduce harmful substances into the atmosphere, land and water. These substances are called pollutants. Smoke, plastic, waste and chemicals are examples of pollutants.

Pollutants can make water unsafe to drink or use. They damage the habitats of plants and animals. Many animals and plants die as a result of pollution caused by humans. When we burn fuel in power stations and vehicle engines, pollutants are given off and go into the atmosphere. The pollutants cause problems in the environment.

Tiny particles called particulates can cause breathing problems to people. Some of the gas dissolves in rainwater to make acid rain. Too much carbon dioxide in the air causes the temperature on earth to rise. This is called global warming. One of the effects of global warming is the melting of ice around the poles, which is causing sea level to rise.

Humans can reduce pollution and slow down climate change by burning less fuel.
